Budapest mayor proposes using traffic‑fine revenue to fund police supplement and expand speed cameras

Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced a plan to increase the number of speed‑camera (traffipax) units in Budapest and to fine drivers for smaller speed excesses – as low as a 15 % over the limit – with the goal of bringing fatal road accidents to zero.

He suggested that the approximately 12 billion HUF collected annually from traffic‑fine revenue be allocated to a special Budapest‑police salary supplement, aimed at alleviating a shortfall of about 2,000 officers and strengthening public safety.

The proposal also includes measures such as a six‑month vehicle ban for extreme speeders and harsher penalties for repeat offenses, following an Austrian‑style model.
