Budapest Mayor unveils renovation plans for Népliget park

Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony has announced completed renovation plans for Népliget park. The proposed development aims to reverse a decade-long decline in the park's usage and condition.

The initial phase of the project focuses on establishing an irrigation system utilizing existing grey water pipes located beneath the park. Karácsony has called for partnership with the national government to fund these improvements, noting that the state holds ownership of portions of the Népliget area.

The Mayor highlighted several upcoming developments in the vicinity that could revitalize the area, including the planned renovation of the Planetarium, the construction of the Transport Museum nearby, and the addition of a new railway stop as part of the Southern Ring Line project.

Addressing political criticism, Karácsony distinguished the Népliget project from the controversial Városliget developments, arguing that the former focuses on renovating an existing 2,000-square-meter building while the latter involved large-scale new construction. He noted that while Városliget suffers from overuse, Népliget suffers from underuse, which attracts undesirable social phenomena.
