Budapest moves to unify parking system amid local opposition
Budapest is moving toward a unified parking system, a plan that requires legislative changes to be finalized by the end of March. Ambrus Kiss, Director General of the Mayor's Office, stated that the government and the capital municipality reached an agreement to centralize the parking system to ensure more efficient and cost-effective enforcement, potentially using camera-equipped vehicles to replace traditional parking attendants.
The proposed reform has sparked significant tension between the Mayor of Budapest and district mayors. Under the current system, parking revenues belong to the individual districts, and many local leaders argue that this centralization will deplete district budgets. In response, some district leaders have expressed opposition, with the Mayor of Józsefváros even suspending the district's membership in the Association of Budapest Municipalities.
Officials clarify that the collected revenue will not be used for the city's general operating costs but will be strictly earmarked for the renovation and maintenance of city and district roads. The goal is to create a more streamlined system where the savings from cheaper operations can be redirected toward infrastructure improvements.
