Budapest officials face housing damage and parking revenue disputes
In Budapest, local government officials are addressing two distinct issues regarding municipal management. In the Óbuda district, Mayor László Kiss highlighted the severe state of a repossessed municipal rental apartment. The property was found in a state of significant destruction, with stripped wallpaper, broken electrical outlets, damaged tiling, and a removed sink, making it unfit for immediate re-rental.
Simultaneously, a political dispute has emerged in the capital regarding the centralization of parking management. Several district mayors have accused Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony of betraying local interests by moving parking operations under the jurisdiction of the Budapest Municipality. Under the new plan, revenues will be directed into a new Budapest Road Fund intended for road renovations rather than being managed by individual districts. While critics argue this strips districts of essential funds, city leadership maintains the system will increase efficiency and ensure parking fees are directly reinvested into road infrastructure.
