Budapest Operetta Theatre artists boycott performances over financial dispute
Tension has escalated at the Budapest Operetta Theatre as several prominent artists refused to perform during the weekend Operett Forgatón event. The boycott is part of an ongoing protest by a group of performers and former leaders, including György Lőrinczy and Miklós Gábor Kerényi, who are expressing solidarity with the company.
The conflict stems from allegations of financial mismanagement. While theatre management cited a lack of funds, artists discovered that hundreds of millions of forints in royalties were paid to writer János Dénes Orbán through KMTG. The protesting artists stated that their participation would be incompatible with the position of the “protesting minority” and expressed deep shock regarding the reported payments.
