Budapest parking reform triggers petition from electric vehicle owners

A petition has been launched to oppose new parking regulations in Budapest scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. The proposed changes include the removal of free parking privileges for vehicles with green license plates and the introduction of double parking fees for vehicles weighing more than 2 tons.

Critics of the measure, including the Hungarian Electric Mobility Association, argue that the rules disproportionately affect electric vehicle owners. Since 18.7 percent of the electric vehicle fleet in Pest County weighs over 2 tons, these drivers would face higher costs. Opponents suggest the policy may inadvertently encourage the use of older, more polluting internal combustion engine vehicles over newer, heavier, zero-emission alternatives.

The petition, which is open to private individuals with Budapest residency, seeks a compromise such as reduced rather than eliminated fees, similar to models used in other major European cities. If the initiative gathers 10,000 signatures, the Budapest City Council is required to place the proposal on its agenda for discussion.
