Budapest police investigate drug spiking at DJ Oti event
The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) has launched an investigation into reports of individuals falling ill during a DJ Oti event held at Hajógyári-sziget in August. Several victims reported sudden loss of strength and consciousness shortly after consuming drinks, leading to suspicions that substances were surreptitiously added to their beverages.
Authorities have appointed a forensic toxicologist and a medical expert to analyze available samples. However, experts note that the investigation faces challenges because urine samples from some victims, such as a 39-year-old woman, were not collected until more than 40 hours after the incident.
Toxicologist Gábor Zacher noted that such delays complicate the detection of substances like GHB (often referred to as liquid ecstasy or a 'date rape drug'). GHB is known for causing rapid loss of consciousness and memory gaps, but it clears the body quickly, making it difficult to distinguish illicit use from normal physiological levels if testing is delayed.
