Budapest police stop suicide attempt on Petőfi Bridge

On 7 June 2026 at around 17:00, police were alerted to a man preparing to jump from Budapest's Petőfi Bridge. Two sheriff units from the Budapest Police Department arrived, led by sergeants Szilágyi Zsolt and Bajkó József Dávid. They approached the distressed 25‑year‑old from both sides, spoke calmly to persuade him, and when he briefly turned his head they seized his clothing and pulled him back onto the bridge rail. The officers restrained him and ambulance crews subsequently transferred him to hospital. The quick, coordinated response prevented a fatal fall.

The incident, captured on video, highlights the role of law‑enforcement in crisis intervention and the importance of immediate mental‑health assistance.
