Budapest records surge in extreme heat days for Alpha generation

Hungarian meteorologists report that the Alpha generation (born 2013‑2025) experienced 92 days with maximum temperatures of 35 °C or higher, nearly matching the combined total of 86 hot days recorded by the X, Y and Z generations. The X generation (1965‑1980) saw only 3 such days, the Y generation (1981‑1996) 27, and the Z generation (1997‑2012) 56.

Analysis of Budapest’s inner‑city temperature records from 1901 to 2025 shows heatwaves becoming more frequent, longer and more intense. The longest heatwave lasted 30 days in 2018, while the 2024 event was the most intense. The first heat period of the current year peaked on 29 June with an average daily temperature of 34 °C. These trends indicate that successive generations are encountering increasingly severe summer heat, posing greater health and urban‑environment challenges.
