Budapest road collapse injures seven, including children
A road collapse occurred on Sződliget Street in Budapest's XV district on a Monday morning, involving a BKK bus carrying between 30 and 40 passengers. The incident was caused by water erosion beneath the asphalt.
Emergency services reported that seven people were taken to the hospital: six sustained minor injuries, including four children and one adult, while one woman was treated for a head injury and remains in stable condition.
Authorities from Budapest Közút, Fővárosi Vízművek, and Fővárosi Csatornázási Művek are conducting a joint investigation to determine the exact cause of the soil erosion. While previous inspections showed no visible signs of surface sinking or hollows, officials noted that further excavation is required to identify the trigger.
Repair work on the drinking water main has commenced. Once completed, the sewage works and road structure restoration will follow. The incident has caused significant traffic disruptions, leading to route diversions for several bus lines, including the 96, 124, 225, 296, and 296A.
