Hungary hits new heat record as temperatures surge to 36.5 °C

A new daily heat record was set in Budapest on 21 June 2026 when the Újpest weather station recorded 36.5 °C, surpassing the previous 35.8 °C mark set in 2007. The extreme temperature prompted the national health authority to extend the second‑degree heat warning for 24 hours and to raise it to a third‑degree alert from Saturday midnight through Tuesday. Forecasts indicate that, across much of the country, temperatures could approach or exceed 40 °C later in the week, with peak values of 38–39 °C expected in the capital and surrounding areas.

Health officials warned that the prolonged heat poses serious risks, especially for children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with cardiovascular conditions. They urged regular fluid intake, avoidance of alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, and recommended staying in shade or air‑conditioned spaces. In Szeged, forecasters predicted daytime highs around 34 °C, while the broader heat wave continues to affect the nation.

Authorities have installed public drinking fountains and “pair‑gate” shelters in Budapest to help residents cope with the heat, and emergency services have been on high alert for heat‑related incidents.
