Budapest to build protected bicycle lane near Rudas Thermal Bath

Budapest Közút has announced plans to construct a new two-way, barrier-protected bicycle lane on a 260-meter section of the Szent Gellért rakpart near the Rudas Thermal Bath. The project, which won a community budget competition, aims to separate pedestrian and cyclist traffic to improve safety.

As part of the development, the bicycle lane will be moved from the sidewalk to the roadway, occupying the space currently used for parking. The new lane will be protected from motor vehicle traffic by a continuous barrier and will feature fully accessible ramps for connecting to the sidewalk. Once completed, the sidewalk in this section will be reserved exclusively for pedestrians.

Construction is expected to begin in late September and will last several weeks. A public procurement call is scheduled to be released within the next two weeks. This initiative is the first step in a longer-term program to upgrade the Szent Gellért rakpart, with further sections being coordinated alongside upcoming work on the Budai Fonódó tram network.
