Budapest Zoo celebrates its 160th anniversary

The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is celebrating its 160th anniversary, marking its opening on August 9, 1866. As one of Europe's oldest operating zoos, the institution has a diverse history involving key figures such as zoologist János Xántus and geologist József Szabó.

Historical milestones include gifts from Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph, as well as the architectural development of the site following the 1896 millennium celebrations. Despite facing financial difficulties and nearing bankruptcy at the turn of the century, the city of Budapest took over its operations in 1907, leading to a major reconstruction that defined its current architectural character.

To commemorate the jubilee, special celebratory events are scheduled for August 8 and 9, featuring interactive programs, nature conservation demonstrations, and educational activities. A special commemorative publication, "Állatkert 160," has also been released to document the institution's history through archival photographs and stories.
