Budapest Zoo receives Global Humane Certified status

The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden has been awarded the ‘Global Humane Certified’ designation by the American Humane Society. This makes the institution the first zoo in Central and Eastern Europe to receive this specific certification.

The accreditation followed a multi-day audit conducted by three specialists who evaluated animal housing conditions and the zoo’s animal rescue activities. The certification, which is valid for the next five years, is based on scientific findings and established professional practices.

Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony stated that the recognition places the 160-year-old zoo among the world’s leading zoological gardens and noted the institution's role as a key partner in the city’s animal protection strategy. Zoo Director General Endre Sós described the certification as significant feedback and a responsibility to maintain high professional standards in the future.
