Budapest Zoo’s New Biodome Opens to the Public

The Budapest Zoo’s Biodome, branded as the “City Oasis,” opened its doors to visitors on July 1, following an official inauguration ceremony on June 30. The opening was attended by Environment Minister László Gajdos, Mayor Gergely Karácsony, Zoo Director Dr. Endre Sós, and a delegation from the Indonesian Embassy.

The 1.7‑hectare indoor facility, located in City Park adjacent to Városliget, showcases tropical and subtropical flora—about 13 000 plants—and a range of exotic animals, including life‑size dinosaur models, hulmans, the critically endangered Bali myna, and other rare species not seen at the zoo for decades. Visitors can access the Biodome using regular zoo tickets.

Construction of the Biodome began in 2018 and was delayed for years due to political disputes, missing its original 2021 target. The museum now offers a climate‑independent, four‑season experience featuring a waterfall, moving reconstructions of ancient creatures, and educational exhibits on conservation programs.
