Budapesti Operettszínház to premiere rock musical in Mohács

To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, the Budapesti Operettszínház will present a new rock musical titled "Mindig itt leszünk. . . Mohács 500" (We Will Always Be Here... Mohács 500). The performance is scheduled for August 29, 2026, and will take place in the main square of Mohács.

Written by György Szomor and directed by Zsolt Homonnay, the production aims to present a modern interpretation of history, focusing on the human stories behind the figures of King Louis II and Mary of Habsburg. The musical intends to move beyond a traditional history book approach to explore themes of resilience, sacrifice, and national identity. The production will incorporate various dance styles, including folk, modern, and contemporary dance, and will involve local school children from Mohács as participants.

In conjunction with the anniversary, the Mohács 500 project has launched a scientific and professional knowledge base website through the National Heritage Institute (NÖRI). This platform will host the latest research in history, archaeology, and anthropology regarding the 1526 battle. Additionally, a traveling exhibition titled "Mohács 500 – Uncovering the Past on New Paths" will tour the country, showcasing recent archaeological findings from the mass graves at the Mohács National Memorial.
