Budapest’s II District Mayor Őrsi Gergely faces extended detention in corruption probe

The Central Investigation Prosecutor’s Office (KNYF) has asked a court to extend the pre‑trial detention of five of six politicians arrested on June 4 in an Óbuda‑area corruption case, while ending the detention measure for Fidesz MP Puskás Péter. The detained officials include Őrsi Gergely, the current mayor of Budapest’s II district; former district mayor Láng Zsolt; former MP and party manager Molnár Zsolt; former deputy mayor Puskás Péter; and former Momentum politicians Matisz Károly and Szkaliczki Tünde. Prosecutors allege that a businessman paid more than 2 billion forints to both governing and opposition officials over several years to secure municipal contracts, with payments distributed across districts II and III and a disputed 70‑30 split between parties. The original 30‑day detention orders are set to expire, prompting the request for extensions for the five remaining suspects.
