Buddhist monks protest in Colombo for Gnanasara Thero's release
Buddhist monks are conducting a continuous Satyagraha protest at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo to demand a presidential pardon for Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, who is imprisoned for contempt of court. The demonstration has entered its seventh day, following an initial march from Kandy to the Presidential Secretariat on October 15.
During the protest, Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thera issued an ultimatum to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, stating the President must either resign or grant an unconditional pardon to Gnanasara Thero. Kassapa Thera warned of larger gatherings of monks in Colombo if demands are not met.
On October 21, police arrested a retired army officer from the Ragama area at the protest site. The individual was found in possession of two sharp weapons and was reportedly heavily intoxicated. While law enforcement is investigating the motive, some social media users have characterized the incident as a staged performance. Additionally, protest leaders alleged that two armed individuals were sent to the site to shout abuse at the monks.
