Buddy Holly: Remembering the rock and roll pioneer on his 90th birthday

Rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly, born Charles Hardin Holley, would have turned 90 years old on September 7. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Holly became one of the most influential musicians of the early rock era through his work with his band, The Crickets.

Holly was noted for his innovation as a singer-songwriter who composed, recorded, and produced his own material. He helped popularize the standard rock band lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums. His hits included “That’ll Be The Day”, “Peggy Sue”, and “Everyday”.

His career was cut short at age 22 when he died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, on February 3, 1959. The accident also claimed the lives of musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Holly’s musical legacy significantly influenced subsequent generations of artists, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.
