Budget constraints and municipal decisions in Freising and Augsburg
In Freising, Mayor Monika Schwind has issued a budget freeze to address a financial deficit. City Treasurer Johannes Hutter reported that the city faces a 2.3 million euro shortfall for 2026 due to increased personnel costs. While initial austerity measures identified 1 million euros in potential savings, a 1.3 million euro gap remains. Although the city council declined to vote on the freeze, the measure remains in effect. The council expressed a desire to find ways to support local clubs, cultural creators, and social institutions by the end of November.
In Augsburg, a budget freeze is causing uncertainty within the local events sector, prompting calls for greater transparency from the CSU. Despite these fiscal pressures, the city has decided to cancel a planned 3 percent increase in daycare fees. Additionally, the city is investing 2.5 million euros in partnership with the Catholic Church to expand the Bischof Ulrich Realschule, which will secure between 75 and 100 new secondary school places.
