Budhnarine Persaud recaptured after New Amsterdam Prison escape

Budhnarine Persaud, a 28-year-old convict serving a sentence for larceny, has been recaptured following his escape from the New Amsterdam Prison in Guyana. Persaud fled the facility on Monday, September 21, around 1:00 p.m. while part of an inmate labor party assigned to the construction of a new prison administrative building.

Investigations revealed that Persaud escaped by walking through a perimeter access gate used by civilian construction personnel. He had been working on the construction detail for approximately one week, allowing him time to observe civilian movements and security gaps. The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) confirmed the breach and launched an internal investigation, stating that any staff found guilty of negligence or dereliction of duty would face severe sanctions.

Persaud was apprehended early Wednesday morning by police acting on information. He was discovered hiding in the bow of a fishing vessel at No. 65 Fisheries, Corentyne. During the operation, six other individuals—four men and two women—were arrested for allegedly harboring the escapee. Persaud is currently in custody at the Springlands Police Station.
