Budi Gunadi Sadikin nominated for WHO Director-General

Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has been officially nominated by the Indonesian government as a candidate for the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General position for the 2027–2032 term. His name appears on the WHO's official prospective candidates list alongside three other nominees from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Belgium.

Sadikin’s candidacy is considered unconventional due to his professional background. Unlike most previous WHO leaders who were medical doctors, Sadikin is a nuclear physicist and former banker, having served as the CEO of Bank Mandiri and the Group CEO of PT Inalum. He has led Indonesia’s Ministry of Health since December 2020, managing the country through the COVID-19 pandemic.

While some observers note the lack of formal medical training as a potential disadvantage, his expertise in finance and his role in architecting the World Bank-hosted Pandemic Fund are viewed as potential assets in the current global health landscape.
