Budva hosts tenth anniversary of Cyrillic culture festival

The tenth anniversary of the ‘Ćirilicom’ (By Cyrillic) festival has opened in the old town of Budva, Montenegro. The three-week event features a diverse program including literature, theater, music, opera, and visual arts.

During the opening ceremony, Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral emphasized the historical and spiritual significance of the Cyrillic script. He noted that the alphabet has marked the culture and spirituality of most Slavic peoples for over 11 centuries. He highlighted its role in preserving sacred texts, such as the Miroslav Gospel, which is listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

The Metropolitan also discussed the script's connection to legal history and sacred art, noting that Cyrillic is present in many UNESCO-listed heritage sites. The festival's program commenced with the promotion of Jordan Plevneš’s book, ‘Ćirilo i Metodije, who are you’, and the opening of Milivoj Babović’s exhibition, ‘I bi slovo’, at the Santa Maria in Punta church.
