Buenos Aires advances mental health reform and housing delivery
The Government of Buenos Aires is advancing a mental health reform process aimed at transitioning the Alejandro Korn Hospital in Melchor Romero from a traditional neuropsychiatric institution to a specialized general hospital. This deinstitutionalization process, which is expected to conclude its chronic inpatient phase by the end of 2026, seeks to replace long-term institutionalization with a community-based care model.
As part of this transition, 175 new housing units are being delivered in Melchor Romero. The housing complex is designed to support individuals reintegrating into the community. Specifically, 139 homes are designated for women participating in the ‘Ellas Hacen’ program or those who have experienced gender-based violence. Additionally, 30 homes are allocated for former patients of the Alejandro Korn Hospital—with 10 units equipped for 24-hour assistance and 20 for daily follow-up—and 6 units are reserved for judicialized cases.
Health Minister Nicolás Kreplak reported that the number of people integrated into the community through the externation process has now surpassed those remaining in chronic inpatient sectors. Official data indicates that 743 people have been externed from neuropsychiatric hospitals in the province, representing a reduction of over 70% compared to the start of the process.
