Buenos Aires and Lima achieve high rankings in global urban indices

Buenos Aires and Lima have achieved high rankings in recent global urban studies focusing on different metrics.

A study by AlphaGeo on climate resilience ranked Buenos Aires sixth out of 72 major cities worldwide. The index evaluates physical exposure to extreme weather—such as heatwaves, droughts, and floods—against a city's capacity for adaptation through infrastructure and early warning systems. Buenos Aires follows Chicago, Addis Ababa, Melbourne, Barcelona, and Ankara in the global standings.

In a separate assessment, the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026 placed Lima third among Latin American cities, trailing only Buenos Aires and Santiago. The report highlights Lima's strong human capital, driven by significant increases in higher education enrollment and graduation rates in Peru. Buenos Aires led the Latin American region in this index due to its skill base, consumer market opportunities, and relatively low housing costs.
