Argentina reduces Remediar essential medicine list to six drugs

The Argentine Ministry of Health has significantly restructured the Remediar program, a long-standing initiative for free medication distribution. Under a new resolution, the national government has reduced the list of essential medicines from 128 to just six active principles. This new list focuses exclusively on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including acetylsalicylic acid, atorvastatin, candesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, ramipril, and rosuvastatin.

As a result of this reduction, many common treatments for conditions such as diabetes (metformin), thyroid issues (levothyroxine), infections (amoxicillin), and respiratory ailments (salbutamol) are no longer covered by the national scheme. The responsibility for financing and providing these excluded medicines will now fall to individual provinces.

Simultaneously, Health Minister Mario Lugones announced the National Vascular Health Plan 2026-2030. This strategic initiative aims to reduce premature deaths and disabilities related to vascular issues, such as strokes and heart attacks. To support this, acute myocardial infarction has been added to the list of mandatory notification events to improve data collection and resource allocation.
