Buenos Aires bus ridership falls 12.9% in August

Bus passenger numbers in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) fell by 12.9% in August compared to the same period last year, according to a report by the Asociación Argentina de Empresarios del Transporte Automotor (AAETA).

The decline is attributed to rising fare costs and increased unemployment. Data shows that weekend travel has been particularly affected, with Saturday ridership dropping by 18.3% and holiday travel plummeting by 41.5% compared to the previous year. Since 2015, total passenger numbers in the region have decreased by approximately 35%.

Additionally, the Instituto Interdisciplinario de Economía Política (IIEP) reported that transportation costs in AMBA rose by 73% between July 2025 and July 2026, significantly increasing average household spending on transit.
