Buenos Aires authorizes autonomous vehicle tests and VTV deregulation

The government of the City of Buenos Aires has implemented two major regulatory shifts regarding transportation and vehicle services.

First, the administration has authorized pilot testing for Level 4 autonomous vehicles and autonomous ground drones (delivery robots) on public streets. Under Resolution 170/SECT/26, companies can apply to test technologies such as LiDAR and AI-driven robots for tasks like infrastructure inspection, cleaning, or delivery. These tests must adhere to strict safety protocols to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

Second, the city has deregulated the Mandatory Technical Vehicle Inspection (VTV) service, ending the previous monopoly held by official concessionaire plants. Following the regulation of Law 6.963, private workshops, dealerships, and importers can now register to provide inspection services. This reform aims to increase competition and allow providers to set their own prices, potentially lowering costs for drivers. Registration for new providers is currently being handled via email, with a simplified digital platform expected to launch on September 1.
