Buenos Aires Civil Registry celebrates 140 years

The Civil Registry of the City of Buenos Aires is celebrating 140 years of service. Since its establishment in 1886, the institution has been responsible for recording vital life events, including births, marriages, domestic partnerships, and deaths.

The General Archive of the Civil Registry, located in Balvanera, houses 32,323 books containing approximately 28 linear kilometers of documentation. These records preserve the history of the city, including mass deaths from historical epidemics and the vital records of notable figures such as Jorge Luis Borges, Jorge Bergoglio, Máxima Zorreguieta, and Diego Maradona.

Through a recent modernization process, the agency has successfully digitized 100% of its collection, totaling more than 20 million records. This digital archive includes three backup copies to complement the original paper documents, facilitating faster access and reducing the physical handling of historical books. The archive currently processes approximately 2,600 daily requests.
