Buenos Aires City cuts 359 managerial posts, teachers' union protests statute changes

The Government of Buenos Aires City announced the elimination of 359 managerial positions, a reduction of more than 20% of its hierarchical structure and bringing the administrative staff to its lowest level in a decade. Governor Jorge Macri said, “Eliminamos 359 cargos gerenciales. Ya dimos de baja 9 mil cargos y alcanzamos la planta administrativa más baja de los últimos 10 años.” The cut represents 8,954 fewer employees and a drop in payroll spending from 44% to 41% of the city budget, alongside digital‑attendance tools and biometric time‑keeping.

At the same time, the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación de la República Argentina (CTERA) publicly rejected a government initiative to modify the city’s Statute Docente without union participation. CTERA declared, “El Estatuto Docente no se toca,” warning that any unilateral change would jeopardise hard‑won labour rights for teachers. The dispute adds a labour‑relations dimension to the administration’s broader reform agenda.
