Buenos Aires deploys 1,500 police in 'Tormenta Negra' security sweep

The Buenos Aires municipal government launched a large‑scale security operation called “Tormenta Negra.” The operation mobilised around 1,500 police officers, two helicopters and an armored vehicle to patrol 16 peripheral neighbourhoods, including Villas 31, 1‑11‑14, 21‑24, Zavaleta, Ciudad Oculta, Barrio 20, Fraga, La Carbonilla, Rodrigo Bueno, Los Piletones, Fátima, Ramón Carrillo, INTA‑Bermejo, Padre Mujica, Cildañez and Barrio Mitre. The stated aim was “pacification and order.” Critics argued that linking insecurity to poverty, migration and subsistence economies creates enemies rather than democratic security, and they denounced the rhetoric surrounding the operation.

Chief of Staff Gabriel Sánchez Zinni described the initiative as a response to rising insecurity, while opposition figures highlighted concerns about the heavy‑handed approach and its social impact on the affected communities.
