Buenos Aires deputy proposes reform of speed camera regulations
Andrés De Leo, a deputy from the Coalición Cívica in Buenos Aires province, has introduced a bill to reform the installation and operation of speed cameras and automated traffic fines. The proposal seeks to shift the focus of these controls from revenue collection to road safety prevention.
The bill proposes that any fines issued by cameras that do not meet new technical and transparency requirements should be annulled. Key requirements include mandatory technical homologation and metrological verifications every six months. Additionally, the project calls for a public registry of all cameras, including their location and certifications.
To improve driver awareness, the legislation mandates visible signage at least 500 meters before a measurement point, clearly indicating the speed limit. The bill also suggests that speed reductions should be implemented gradually to avoid sudden changes in limits.
