Buenos Aires metro families face $300 k monthly bill for utilities and transport

In July 2026 a household in the Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA) needed about $295,826 to cover electricity, natural gas, water and public transport, according to the IIEP‑UBA/Conicet report. The basket rose 4.6 % from June and 53 % year‑on‑year, marking a 966 % increase since December 2023 versus a 241 % rise in the national consumer‑price index.

The cost now represents roughly 15 % of the average regional salary of $1,924,456, down from covering 6.5 baskets versus 7.8 a year earlier. Transport accounts for 40 % of the total bill ($121,023), followed by electricity ($68,210), gas ($64,862) and water ($41,724). Households bear about 54 % of service production costs while the state subsidises the remaining 46 %; subsidies rose 10 % in real terms up to 17 July.

The steep tariff adjustments and higher winter consumption drove the latest surge, affecting the 16 million residents of the AMBA, or 36 % of Argentina’s population.
