Buenos Aires gains authority over new criminal offenses and juvenile cases

Argentina's national government and the City of Buenos Aires signed two agreements that transfer jurisdiction over a range of criminal offenses to the city. The transferred offenses include sexual integrity crimes, offences against honor, liberty violations, intellectual‑property infringements, traffic safety violations and illegal wildlife‑related activities. A separate agreement expands the city's competence to prosecute all non‑federal crimes committed by minors, covering youths aged 14‑18 and providing a tutelary scheme for those under 14.

The accords, the "Fourth Progressive Transfer of Criminal Competences" and the "Agreement on Criminal and Correctional Matters for Minors," were signed by national Justice Minister Juan Bautista Mahiques and city Justice Minister Gabino Tapia, who highlighted the milestone for Buenos Aires' autonomy under Mayor Jorge Macri. Implementation will begin after ratification by the Argentine Congress and the Buenos Aires City Legislature and after the required budget allocations are approved.
