Buenos Aires government recovers 1,000 properties from illegal occupation

Buenos Aires City Government Chief Jorge Macri announced the recovery of 1,000 properties that had been illegally occupied. The government estimates the value of these recovered assets, which include homes, hotels, buildings, and state-owned sites, exceeds $500 million.

Operations were carried out through coordination between the City Police, the judiciary, and various executive agencies. Significant activity was reported in the Balvanera and Almagro neighborhoods, with 130 and 53 procedures respectively. Other areas involved included San Cristóbal and Boedo.

While the administration presents these actions as the restitution of usurped properties to their rightful owners, some evictions were also ordered due to structural risks. Some displaced residents have contested the characterization of the operations, claiming they were long-term owners or tenants facing eviction under the guise of building safety concerns.
