Buenos Aires Province passes new traffic and school cell phone laws

The Buenos Aires Province Legislature has passed two significant pieces of legislation affecting daily life and education.

A new traffic law modifies the priority of passage at intersections. While the traditional rule of yielding to the vehicle on the right remains, it is no longer absolute. The law establishes a hierarchy of precedence: highways, semi-highways, routes, highways, avenues, streets, and passages. This change aims to provide legal certainty and prevent judicial conflicts in cases where vehicles from different types of roads intersect.

Additionally, the Senate approved a law regulating the use of cell phones and other digital screens in secondary schools, both public and private. The law prohibits device use during the school day unless explicitly authorized by teachers for pedagogical purposes. The measure, which affects approximately 1.4 million students, will require further regulation by the provincial government to establish specific protocols and implementation criteria.
