Buenos Aires honors photojournalist José Luis Cabezas with street renaming
The Buenos Aires Legislature has approved a law to rename a section of California Street in the Barracas neighborhood to José Luis Cabezas. The change applies to the stretch between the 2100 and 3400 blocks, where the Perfil editorial office is located.
José Luis Cabezas was a prominent photojournalist murdered in 1997 while working for Noticias magazine. His death occurred shortly after he photographed businessman Alfredo Yabrán, an event that became a symbol for the defense of freedom of expression and press freedom in Argentina.
The project was proposed by Rodrigo Lloret, director of Perfil, and legislator Matías López. In addition to the name change, the law mandates the installation of a commemorative plaque at the corner of José Luis Cabezas and Santa Elena streets. The initiative followed a mandatory public hearing process and received 47 votes in favor, with 14 abstentions and no votes against.
