Buenos Aires hosts debate on technology's impact on education and student wellbeing

The Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires will host a public discussion on October 28 titled ‘Growing among screens: evidence to accompany learning and school wellbeing.’ The event, organized by the Integral Evaluation Unit of Educational Quality and Equity (UEICEE), aims to address the challenges posed by digital devices in classrooms and their effects on student concentration and emotional health.

According to OECD data, Argentina ranks among the countries with the highest levels of distraction caused by mobile phone use. The discussion will draw on scientific evidence, including studies from the London School of Economics suggesting that removing cell phones from classrooms can lead to academic improvements. The goal is to develop practical strategies for responsible screen use to foster better school coexistence and integral development.

In a broader educational context, experts emphasize that the digital transformation requires teachers to develop specific new competencies. These include digital literacy, the responsible use of artificial intelligence, socio-emotional skills, and a growth mindset. Educators are increasingly encouraged to adopt a lifelong learning approach to effectively navigate technological and social changes in the classroom.
