Brazil inflation rises 0.82% in September, exceeding target

Brazil's official inflation index, the IPCA, rose 0.82% in September, marking its highest monthly increase since March 2026. This acceleration follows a period of deflation (-0.32%) in August. The 12-month accumulated inflation reached 4.58%, which exceeds the government's established tolerance limit of 4.5%.

Key drivers of the increase included the housing sector, which rose 2.31%, primarily due to a 7.98% surge in residential electricity prices following the end of the Itaipu Bonus. Transportation also contributed significantly, with airfares increasing by 9.66% and fuels rising by an average of 1.41%.

After three months of decline, the food and beverage group rose 0.83%. Notable price hikes within this category included tomatoes, which jumped 37.76%, and potatoes, which rose 24.07%. While most regions saw price increases, Rio Branco recorded a lower monthly inflation of 0.53%, aided by a 14.13% drop in airfares and a 7.40% decrease in egg prices.
