Buenos Aires launches subway modernization plan for 2027
The Government of the City of Buenos Aires has launched a comprehensive modernization plan for its subway system, aiming for significant upgrades by 2027. Managed by Subterráneos de Buenos Aires (SBA) and the Ministry of Infrastructure, the project includes the complete renewal of the Line B fleet with 174 new cars featuring air conditioning, LED lighting, and security cameras. Additionally, Lines A and C are set to receive 50 new cars in January to improve service frequency.
Infrastructure improvements extend to accessibility and station maintenance. The city is replacing 84 obsolete escalators and installing 12 new elevators at various stations. Works are also underway for the future Line F and electrical infrastructure upgrades.
Regarding long-term urban mobility, the Buenos Aires climate roadmap projects that bus and Metrobus services will maintain a stable presence, accounting for approximately 35.9% of the city's modal split by 2050. Meanwhile, immediate changes are coming to surface transit, as the National Secretariat of Transport has proposed route modifications for bus Line 29, which would shorten one of its branches to terminate at Plaza Italia.
