Buenos Aires legislator proposes changes to traffic light sequences

A new legislative proposal in the City of Buenos Aires aims to modify traffic light sequences to improve road safety. Introduced by legislator Silvia Imas, the project seeks to amend the city’s Transit and Transport Code to ensure a uniform interpretation of signal colors.

The proposal suggests eliminating the yellow light phase that currently occurs before a green light in some intersections. Under the new scheme, the sequence would be Green to Yellow to Red, and then directly to Green once the red phase ends. This change is intended to prevent drivers from anticipating a green light prematurely while cross-traffic is still clearing the intersection.

Additionally, the initiative contemplates implementing a ‘all-red’ period at certain crossings, where all signals remain red for a brief moment to ensure intersections are fully cleared before new traffic is permitted to proceed.
