Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral holds significant national history

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires serves as a central symbol of Argentine history, faith, and political memory. Located in front of Plaza de Mayo, the building's current neoclassical design was completed in 1853 and features a facade designed by French sculptor Joseph Dubourdieu.

The Cathedral functions as a national pantheon, housing the mausoleum of José de San Martín, the Liberator of America, who has been interred there since 1880. The site has also served as the pastoral home for Pope Francis during his tenure as Archbishop of Buenos Aires and remains a frequent venue for state ceremonies involving various Argentine presidents.
