Buenos Aires noise pollution impacts resident health
Noise pollution in Buenos Aires is significantly impacting the daily lives and health of residents, contributing to stress, sleep disorders, and hypertension. According to World Health Organization data, prolonged exposure to noise levels exceeding 55 decibels can lead to chronic health issues.
In Buenos Aires, many areas frequently exceed these limits due to heavy traffic, sirens, construction, and commercial activities such as loud music from local venues and street vendors. Residents in neighborhoods like Almagro, Villa Crespo, San Telmo, and Palermo have reported worsening conditions in recent years.
While City Law 1540 establishes maximum limits—65 decibels during the day (7:00 to 22:00) and 50 decibels at night in residential zones—compliance remains low. Residents often face bureaucratic hurdles when attempting to report noise violations, and the city's urban design, characterized by tall buildings that reflect sound, further exacerbates the issue.
