Buenos Aires proposes tobacco ban on maritime and riverside beaches

A legislative project has been introduced in the Buenos Aires Province Legislature to prohibit tobacco consumption on maritime and riverside beaches. Proposed by Deputy Juan Martín Malpeli of Fuerza Patria, the initiative aims to protect the health of swimmers and workers while reducing environmental pollution caused by cigarette butts.

The proposal would apply to all districts with coastlines, state-administered tourist units, and concessioned beach clubs. Under the project, municipalities could designate specific smoking areas, provided they do not exceed 10% of the total beach surface. These areas must be located at least 50 meters away from playgrounds, nurseries, first aid stations, and main pedestrian access points.

To ensure compliance, the project mandates clear signage stating ‘Playa libre de humo’ (Smoke-free beach) at all coastal accesses. It also requires the installation of wind-resistant receptacles for cigarette butts every 100 meters in designated zones. Failure to comply could result in economic sanctions. The initiative seeks to unify a fragmented regulatory landscape where various municipalities have already implemented individual smoke-free policies.
