Buenos Aires Province appeals injunction freezing electricity tariff hikes
The government of Buenos Aires Province and four major electricity distributors—EDEN, EDEA, EDES, and EDELAP—have appealed a judicial injunction that froze electricity tariff increases and ordered the reversal of recent hikes.
The injunction was granted following a legal challenge by the provincial Ombudsman's Office, which argued that the increases, implemented via Resolution 585/2026, were invalid due to a lack of mandatory public hearings. The judge noted that no public hearings had been held for ten years, which undermines the users' right to information.
The ruling not only suspended the provincial components of the tariffs but also ordered companies to refund the excess amounts collected since July 1. The provincial government and the distributors argue that this measure causes significant underfunding, potentially impacting service quality and infrastructure investment. The case has been transferred to the Court of Appeals in Mar del Plata for further review.
