Buenos Aires province announces plan to reactivate Tandil passenger train

The government of the Province of Buenos Aires, led by Axel Kicillof, has announced a strategic plan to reactivate the passenger train service between Plaza Constitución and Tandil. This initiative is part of a broader connectivity project managed by the provincial Ministry of Transport to link major cities and ports within the province.

The project aims to restore services outside the Metropolitan Area, targeting ten high-density cities, including Tandil, Mar del Plata, Bahía Blanca, and San Nicolás, while establishing strategic connections to the ports of Quequén, La Plata, and San Nicolás. The provincial government is collaborating with the Latin American Railway Association (ALAF) to develop the route and evaluate costs.

To fund the reactivation, the province is considering two scenarios: receiving a direct transfer from the national government to manage the service with provincial funds, or seeking long-term national and international investors for infrastructure works. The Las Flores–Tandil branch, which has faced various closures and suspensions since 2007, currently only supports freight operations.
