Buenos Aires Province approves unified DNA evidence protocol

The Government of the Province of Buenos Aires has officially approved a unified protocol for the collection, conservation, and submission of DNA samples for criminal investigations. Formalized through Resolution 2060 and signed by Security Minister Javier Alonso, the measure aims to standardize procedures for handling genetic evidence from the initial collection stage through to laboratory analysis.

The protocol was developed through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Security and the Secretariat of Criminal Policy, Fiscal Coordination, and Criminal Instruction of the Provincial Attorney General's Office. Other participating entities included the Scientific Police Superintendency and the Directorate of Peridical and Forensic Studies.

Key objectives of the new regulation include strengthening the traceability, preservation, and evidentiary value of genetic samples. The guidelines establish uniform criteria for staff training, the use of appropriate materials, individual packaging and labeling, and the strict maintenance of the chain of custody. Laboratories will initially accept up to five disputed pieces of evidence per submission, provided they meet the established packaging and documentation requirements.
