Argentina implements September utility and transport tariff increases
Argentina implements several utility and transport tariff updates effective September 1. In the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), electricity bills are expected to rise by an average of 1.75%, while natural gas rates will increase by 1.40% nationwide. To mitigate the impact on vulnerable sectors, the national government has increased the subsidized electricity consumption threshold from 150 kWh to 200 kWh per month.
In the Province of Buenos Aires, electricity rates for distributors such as Edelap, EDEA, EDEN, and EDES will see increases between 1% and 2.4%. This adjustment stems from a 5.6% rise in wholesale energy prices and a 1.8% adjustment in the Value Added of Distribution (VAD).
Public transportation costs are also rising. In AMBA, bus fares in the province of Buenos Aires increased by 4.3%, with minimum fares reaching $1,158.97 for registered SUBE users. Subte (subway) fares rose by 4%, and metropolitan train fares saw a 14.29% increase, with minimum tickets starting at $480.
Additionally, the province of La Rioja has extended a freeze on essential service tariffs, including electricity, water, and urban transport, for an additional 60 days until October 31, 2026, to protect low-income households.
