Buenos Aires Province begins annual pejerrey fishing ban

The annual fishing ban for pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) has commenced in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Running from September 1 until November 30, the measure is regulated by the Provincial Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agrarian Development to protect the species' spawning cycle and preserve resources within the Pampean basin.

During this period, recreational fishing is restricted to Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, though certain lagoons allow fishing on Fridays. Specific catch limits apply depending on the location: Laguna Chasicó allows up to 30 specimens, while lagoons such as Cochicó, Del Monte, Hinojo Grande, and La Salada Grande allow up to 20. Other lagoons and interior rivers, streams, and canals are limited to 15 specimens per fisherman.

Additional regulations include a minimum extraction size of 25 cm and a prohibition on nighttime fishing in all Buenos Aires lagoons. Permitted hours are from dawn (5:00) to dusk (20:00). Anglers are limited to one rod with a maximum of three hooks per line. In certain smaller or low-water lagoons, motorboat navigation is prohibited to prevent interference with egg-laying reed areas.
