Buenos Aires province hit by severe late-season frosts

Severe late-season frosts have impacted rural areas in northern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Temperatures in rural sectors reached as low as -6.1°C, with some locations recording levels not seen in decades. In Berdier, a temperature of -4.5°C matched a 60-year low for the month of September.

The weather event has raised concerns among agricultural producers regarding potential damage to crops. In San Pedro, temperatures dropped to -2.5°C, prompting fruit growers to implement emergency measures, such as burning wood between trees, to protect blossoms and newly set fruit.

While the frost has put wheat, corn, and pea crops on alert, specialists from INTA suggest that wheat may not face critical damage as many plots are currently in the tillering stage. However, the timing of these frosts is considered unusual for the approaching spring season.
